Tree Care, Safety, & FAQ: Welcome

HOW DO I KEEP MY CHRISTMAS TREE LOOKING FRESH?

  • When you pick up your tree at High Country Firs, one of our friendly staff will make a fresh cut to remove about a 1/2-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk. This will help the tree uptake water. Once home, place the tree in water as soon as possible, but within 6 hours is ideal.

  • Displaying trees in water in a traditional reservoir type stand is the most effective way of maintaining their freshness and minimizing needle loss problems. Check on a daily basis that the stand's water reservoir is kept full of water. You can purchase a reservoir stand here or at the downtown High Country Firs location.

  • Additionally, you can add Christmas Tree Preservative to your tree's water source. This blend of fertilizers and sugars are an affordable way to extend the life of your Christmas tree.

  • Keep trees away from major sources of heat (fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, direct sunlight). Lowering the room temperature will also slow the drying process.

  • Use no lights, or sparingly use lights that produce low or no heat to reduce drying of the tree.

WHAT ABOUT MY WREATH OR GARLAND?

Your quality, florist-crafted wreath or garland needs very little care. It should be kept out of the direct sunlight and, if it is indoors, keep it away from heat sources.

You can extend the life and increase the fragrance of your wreath by spritzing it with water 2-3 times a week. For improved results, mix water with Christmas Tree Preservative before spritzing to provide wreaths with a special formula of fertilizer and sugars.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF HAVING A CHRISTMAS TREE, A WREATH, OR GARLAND IN MY HOME?

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), approximately one tenth of one percent (0.12%) of residential fires involve a Christmas Tree -- both real and artificial.

To protect yourself and your home from harm:

  • Water your tree on a daily basis. Check the stand daily to make sure that the level of water does not go below the base of the tree. With many stands, there can still be water in the stand even though the base of the tree is no longer submerged in water.

  • Keep trees away from major sources of heat (fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, direct sunlight). Lowering the room temperature will slow the drying process, resulting in less water consumption each day.

  • Use no lights or sparingly use lights that produce low or no heat to reduce drying of the tree.

  • Always inspect light sets prior to placing them on the tree. If worn, replace with a new set.

  • Do not overload electrical circuits.

  • Always turn off the tree lights or surrounding decor lights when not in use, or when leaving the house or going to bed.

  • Monitor the tree for freshness. After Christmas or if the tree is very dry, remove it from the house.

  • Never burn any part of a Christmas tree in a wood stove or fireplace.
